Can you believe it? It's okay to give a damn again!!

Written by: Darrell Flowers

Before I even talk about the possible results of the upcoming presidential election, I'd like to talk about the positive effect that this election has had on the African American community. People actually care again! As far as I know, this is the first time in my adult life that we, black folk, have given this big of a damn about anything political (I could be wrong, but I don't think I am.). I'll give you an example. I was home in New Orleans about a week and a half ago and while I was there, Johnny Brasco (my production partner and good friend) and I went to a brass band concert uptown. Inside was the show, and outside there were loads of people socializing. And they all seemed to be talking about this election. I must have missed the memo. When the hell did that start happening?,(lol).People were at the club talking about politics! I don't know about you, but that blew my mind. I'm a history buff, especially American history and government (I know, dorky. But I don't care. I like it. You have a problem with that?). And I usually can't pay anyone my age to talk about that kind of thing with me. But now, it's the only thing to talk about. I'm happy. I spend all day watching the history channel and now I can actually talk about this stuff. Thanks Barack!!!

People Care Again!! And it's a beautiful thing. I once had a talk with a man who was my age, 27, during the civil rights movement of the sixties. And he told me that while all heroes of the movement took their stands because of a deeply rooted commitment to the betterment of us all, Way more people were outspoken i those times because at the end of the day, it was cool to care then.
People (Especially the ladies..lol) still loved athletes, musicians and actors then, just like now. But they loved people who stood for something even more. I know it seems hard to imagine now, but I bet you MLK and Malcolm X had to beat them (ladies) off with a stick. No pun intended. Caring and standing for something added to the appeal of any man or woman who was courageous enough to do it. Look at Muhammad Ali. He was a great boxer.....Shit, he was the greatest of them all. But what will people most remember about him? Probably the fact that he was willing to give up everything (money, fame, the prestigious heavyweight championship tittle, etc.) by taking a stand and refusing to be drafted into the US Army in protest of the war in Vietnam. But somewhere along the line, that kind of care became lame. Up until very recently, if you mentioned "the cause" , or any cause for that matter, you were immediately written off by a lot of people as either being preachy, or one of those "conscious brothers". And thus, no one was willing to listen up. Until now.

To my surprise, mainstream musicians (rappers in particular) are making politically charged music again. And not just your usual either. Nas is no sup rise. He's been on this vibe forever. But people are listening with a new ear now. And by the way, everyone should hear his latest album "N***** Untitled". David Banner....Common, they have a rep for taking a stand in their music from time to time. But now rappers like Young Jeezy are giving a damn. It;s a beautiful thing. Who can say? Jeezy might have always given a damn about these issues... I don't know. But the fact is, it's cool to come out and say so again. The Game has an awesome song dedicated to MLK on his new album. Lil Wayne even gave some of our current black leaders a piece of his mind on his song "Misunderstood".

And art is as always imitating life... or vice versa. I don't know. And honestly, I don't care. I just hope it keeps up. Both in entertainment and in everyday life. I hope that people don't revert back to old ways once this election is over, no mater what the outcome. This is the best we have looked as a whole in a very long time.
